About

What is ADVENTurous?

Adventurous is a one-day festival of ideas, artistry, spoken word and live music imagining how we got to where we are, and how we might move towards a new place – all through three prisms: faith, ecology and the economy.

In the midst of struggling global economies, political transition and the end of the world* (apparently, according to the Mayan calendar at least!), the Christian season of Advent can be seen as a sign of new arrivals, a world re-imagined, cultures disrupted and paradigms well and truly shifted.

Bringing together thinkers, activists and artists from different faith traditions (and none) for a day of exploration, debate and wonder, Adventurous is an event hosted jointly by Greenbelt and Union Chapel, drawing on a number of creative partners from a range of different networks – all with an interest in trying conspire hopefully towards a better tomorrow.

Day programme

Adventurous takes place on Saturday 1st December at Union Chapel.

0930 - 1030: Registration and refreshments

1030 - 1230: Where are we at?
We'll spend the morning trying to understand where we've come from and how we got to where we are today – economically, ecologically and spiritually. As well as our renowned thinkers and speakers, there will be artistry woven throughout the set-piece talks, panels and debate.

1230 - 1330: Lunch/Bar open/Artists
We'll have a singer-songwriter or two to entertain you as you munch your lunch and have a drink in the bar.

1330 - 1530: Where are we going?
In the afternoon we'll turn our attention to the future. What might it look like? Economically, ecologically and spiritually speaking? What are the risks? What is the best we can hope for? What is the worst that could happen?

1530 - 1600: Refreshments
The breaks will be time for you to chat and carry on the wondering. Plus, there will be great visual arts around the venue – curated and hung for us by Engedi Arts.

1600 - 1800: How will we get there?
And finally, it's time to ask ourselves the big question: just how are we going to get to the 'new place'? Given the fact that so many of us think something has to give, what will we risk to move ahead?

Evening programme

As the day slips into the evening, you'll have chance to pop out to the many eateries close to Union Chapel to refuel before Adventurous plays host to a great lineup of artists who embody the hope, risk and beauty we'll need if we're to make it to the new place.

19.00: Doors open
19.30: Festival of sound featuring:
Harry Baker, Iain Archer, Hope & Social, Grace Petrie

Inspired by art

At the heart of Greenbelt lies a belief that all art can inspire, so alongside talks and music, Union Chapel will host a collection of incredible art, currated by Engedi.

Each specially commissioned piece will focus on one of our three themes of the day and help us consider our journey towards advent.
